A part of a second floor stairway collapsed while a man and his child were walking up the stairs of their home on Monday afternoon. The man was holding his child when he stepped on a concrete landing that collapsed.

The concrete landing collapse caused the two to fall approximately ten to twelve feet. Luckily, the father and son had only minor injuries. Unfortunately, problems with building stairways and porches are becoming all too common in Chicago. Improper maintenance on buildings and failing to follow building codes in Chicago has caused several accidents in recent years and some have resulted in death. Many of these tragedies could likely have been avoided if the building codes were properly followed and inspections were more frequent.
